Description: The artist Oskar Pletsch was known for his illustrations of children's books. The illustrated book "Die Kinderstube in 36 Bildern" was his first big success. It shows children's life in many facets - carefree at play or proudly helping with the housework. From then until 1881, another children's book was published annually. The present sheet shows a full-figure profile portrait of the artist's daughter. She sits on a high chair and reads a book in depth. For the illustration of his figures, the observation of his own children was inspiring and a good school.
Oskar Pletsch studied at the Dresden Academy of Art and was a pupil of Ludwig Richter. The influence of Richter is unmistakable in Pletsch's drawings and woodcuts. From Richter's late romanticism he finally developed his own genre painting, which concentrated especially on everyday and family motifs.
