Description: The artist Oskar Pletsch, known for his children's book illustrations, has captured scenes from the private room on paper. He shows family members in intimate moments of peace: withdrawn, doing nothing or reading. On this sheet we see the artist's wife sitting in profile. With her hand on her chin, her elbow resting on her knee, she assumes a thoughtful position. In 1860 Oskar Pletsch (1830 Berlin - 1880 Niederlößnitz) achieved his first great success with the book "Die Kinderstube in 36 Bildern" (The nursery in 36 pictures). From then until 1881 a children's book was published annually. In "Die Kinderstube in 36 Bildern" he shows children's life in many facets - carefree at play or proudly helping with the housework. For the illustration of his figures, the observation of his wife and children was inspiring and a good school.
Oskar Pletsch studied at the Dresden Academy of Art and was a pupil of Ludwig Richter. The influence of Richter is unmistakable in Pletsch's drawings and woodcuts. From Richter's late romanticism he finally developed his own genre painting, which concentrated especially on everyday and family motifs.
