Osvaldo Borsani was born in Varedo in Brianza in 1911 from a family of furniture manufacturers with a long and consolidated artisan tradition; At the age of sixteen he began to collaborate with the Atelier of Varedo, the company founded by his father Gaetano. In 1931 he obtained the artistic high school diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. In the same year he enrolled in the first year of the Biennium of Architecture, and then graduated in 1936 at the Milan Polytechnic. [1] In 1933 he participated in the V Triennale di Milano with the project for the Casa minima, which was awarded the silver medal. [1] Borsani's professional physiognomy combines the investigation of the quality of materials with a passion for technology and an interest in creativity and avant-garde artistic experiences. It is precisely this interest that has led him, since the post-war period, to forge bonds of friendship and professional collaboration with numerous artists, including Lucio Fontana, Agenore Fabbri, Aligi Sassu, Roberto Crippa, Fausto Melotti, Arnaldo and Giò Pomodoro. [1] In 1953, together with his brother Fulgenzio, he founded the Tecno company with the aim of transforming the artisan family business into an industrial reality. The creation of special furniture and custom-made supplies thus takes on a more contained dimension in favor of the start of a production of furniture in series. To reinforce this approach, in 1968 Osvaldo Borsani with Eugenio Gerli designs the Graphis system which inaugurates a new way of conceiving the space for work. In the seventies with the expansion of the production lines and industrial spaces, the Tecno Project Center was born which, under the guidance of Osvaldo Borsani, his daughter Valeria Borsani and her husband Marco Fantoni, extended the design research to the various types of buildings of public interest and urban spaces. [1] Works by Osvaldo Borsani, produced by Tecno, are exhibited in the following museums: Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Center Pompidou in Paris, Neue Sammlung in Munich, Triennale di Milano, Musée des arts décoratifs of Montréal.
