Ottoman Silk Embroidery
pre 1700, 43 x 160 cm, North West Anatolia, Bursa
This Ottoman silk embroidery on a linen foundation in a long and narrow horizontal format was the face of a sofa cushion, which could be used as a neck roll or as an arm support (uzun yastik). Three red tulips and two blue carnations, arranged as slanting motifs, lie on a white ground that has darkened with age. They are bordered by a blue frame decorated with wave forms. It is the oversized scale of the motifs that defines the eccentric appearance of this textile.
TAYLOR, RODERICK, Ottoman Embroidery. Wesel 1993, ill. p. 169
Condition
Slight signs of age and wear. Mounted onto fabric.
