Sculpture of Our Lady - Immaculate Conception - 19th century - Pipe clay. This particularly detailed image shows Mary with crown of flowers, eyes raised, arms crossed and standing on a globe-shaped pedestal with clouds, stars and angels. She tramples barefoot the snake with apple, symbolising the victory on original sin. This rendering of Mary, Immaculate Conception is based on paintings by Murillo and the Ribera (Spain, Baroque) . The inscription "Immaculée Conception" - "Le 8 décembre 1854" refers to the bul 'Ineffabilis Deus' issued by Pope Pius IX on 8 December 1854 to confirm the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which means that she was born without sin.
