PABLO PICASSO | L’ÉTREINTE

[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collection
PABLO PICASSO
1881 - 1973
L’ÉTREINTE

signed Picasso and dated 9.9.68.III (lower right)
pencil on paper
sheet: 49.5 by 66cm., 19½ by 26in.
framed: 87.6 by 100.7cm., 34½ by 39⅝in.
Drawn on 9th September 1968.

Condition Report:
Executed on cream wove paper, the sheet is attached to the mount in five places around the upper and vertical edges. The horizontal edges of the sheet are slightly unevenly cut, and the vertical edges of the sheet are slightly deckled. The sheet undulates very slightly. There is some time staining to the sheet, most notably at the left and upper edges. There are three areas of restoration in the left hand side of the work: by the male figure's proper right leg, in his proper right forearm, and one in the upper left corner. There is a small tear (approx. 1cm.) to the centre of the right edge. There is some discolouration to the left hand side of the sheet, possibly associated with some previous cleaning or mount. There is an inconsistency to the sheet at the male figure's forehead. There are a couple of tiny spots of foxing, only visible upon close inspection. There is some very light surface dirt. The work is in overall good condition.

Provenance:
André Emmerich Gallery, New York (acquired from the artist)

James Goodman Gallery, Inc., New York

Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1979
