PABLO PICASSO | MATERNITÉ
PABLO PICASSO (1881 - 1973)
MATERNITÉ
inscribed N. Tourgueneff, nouvelles scenes de la vie russe, Paris. librairie Hachette et cie, 79 Boulevard Saint Germain (lower centre)
charcoal on paper
Sheet: 25.2 by 15.9cm., 9⅞ by 6¼in.
Framed: 53 by 43cm., 20⅞ by 16⅞in.
Executed in 1902-03.
Condition Report:
Executed on cream laid paper, not laid down, hinged to the mount in two places along the upper edge and floating in the over-mount. All four edges are unevenly torn, most unevenly on the lower and right edges. The sheet is slightly time-stained and there are a few spots of foxing in places. There is some surface dirt and handling marks in places, much of which is inherent to the artist's process. There is a small nick to the upper part of the extreme left edge and a very minor horizontal crease to the left part of the extreme lower edge. There is a small area of watercolour and pen and ink towards the lower right corner, presumably part of another work by the artist, from when the present sheet was part of a larger sheet. This work is in overall good condition.
Provenance:
Estate of the artist
Marina Picasso (the artist’s granddaughter; acquired from the above)
