[ translate ]

From a series of photos taken when Cecil Beaton joined his friend Truman in Greece after Truman had finished writing Breakfast at Tiffany's. Two black and white photographs of Paros, Greece, by Sir Cecil Beaton, from the summer of 1958. Each print is stamped CECIL BEATON PHOTOGRAPH on the reverse and inscribed in pencil PAROS. GREECE with a reference number. Both are unmounted, on single-weight paper with untrimmed edges. Capote spent that summer on Paros with Jack Dunphy, and Beaton, a friend of many years, joined them on the island.

Condition: the portrait with a soft curl and light handling creases at the upper edge, the image clean and strong. The tree study in poorer order: the sheet toned overall, with scattered foxing specks, a small loss to the upper right corner and soft creasing across the top. Both unmounted and unframed.

Approx. Dimensions Each Image: 9.5" x 9.5"

Artist or Maker: Sir Cecil Beaton (British, 1904-1980)

Provenance: Truman Capote; Gerald Clarke, his biographer

This lot is part of The Magpie and the Swans: The Possessions of Truman Capote, collected over a lifetime between New York and Sagaponack, and preserved since 1984 by his biographer, Gerald Clarke.
