PAIR OF FIGURAL CONDIMENT CENTERPIECES

Stockelsdorf, circa 1771–86, attributed to.
Faience decorated in overglaze enamels. Modelled as a peasant boy and girl seated in front of a three-part condiment ménage. Unmarked.
H 21.5 cm, 23 cm, L 27 cm, 28 cm.
Restored.

Provenance:
- Antiques dealer, Fribourg, 1990.
- Peter Ducret Collection, Kilchberg.

The price list of the Stockelsdorf faience manufactory mentions figures for salt and pepper (Pietsch, "Stockelsdorfer Fayencen", Lübeck 1987, p. 187). Pietsch assumed that these must have been seated male or female figures in peasant dress, each with shaped dishes for salt and pepper placed to either side (p. 75). He does not cite an identical pair of models. Comparable pairs were offered at Christie’s (14 April 1980, lot 296) and Galerie Stuker (13–26 November 1986, no. 86), but were described as Holics and Niderviller, respectively. An identical ménage with the peasant figure was offered at Rudolph Bangel in Frankfurt in 1912, catalogue 830, no. 829, where it was attributed to Strasbourg. An identical pair was catalogued as Stockelsdorf or Marieberg, circa 1770, at Fischer, Heilbronn, auction 46, 28 November 1987, lot 196.
