Description

PALLAS, PETER SIMON (1741-1811). Travels through the Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire in the Years 1793 and 1794. 2e editie. I-II. London (printed for John Stockdale) 1812.

4to (260x210 mm). With 3 folding engraved maps (at the end of vol. II), 31 mostly folding and handcoloured engraved plates (of 52, lacking 21 plates, a few with spotting to margins, some foxing; text partly discoloured by plates) and 28 mainly handcoloured engraved vignettes in the text.
Very worn contemporary red half calf bindings, vol I with upper cover detached, together with the first sheet which is loose, vol. II with split joints, worn and partly damaged gilt spines in six compartments, marbled edges. Bookseller's label: Stephen Moore, St. Cork.
About 20 pages in the beginning inkspots to the upper margin, some staining to inner margin in a few places. Minor foxing.

Second edition in English of Pallas' travels from St. Petersburg eastwards, along the Volga, to Astrakhan, the Caspian Sea, thence to the Caucasus Mountains, the Crimea, and back to St. Petersburg.
Pallas was one of the savants chosen by the St. Petersburg Academy to carry on the work of examining the resources of the far distant parts of the Russian Empire. He left St. Petersborg in 1768 and spent full six years investigating various districts of Siberia...
