The Nautilus, originally designed by Gerald Genta in 1976, is thought to owe its unique shape and construction to the transatlantic liners' porthole designs; inspired by the secure windows at sea that were sealed hermetically by a clever system of tension bolts against the glass. The case design echoes this principle through the two extensions at the sides of the case which are secured by lateral screws, keeping the rubber seal compressed between the bezel and case body.

As the Nautilus was originally manufactured in steel, it was also Patek's first foray into the world of luxury sports watches.
