Lot Essay
Introduced at the Basel Fair in April 2011, reference 5270 succeeded the celebrated reference 5970 and marked an important milestone in the history of Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar chronographs. Most significantly, it was the first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph by the manufacture to be powered by an entirely in-house designed and manufactured chronograph calibre.

Reference 5270 is equipped with the manually wound calibre 29-535 PS Q, based on the calibre 29-535 PS first introduced in 2009 with reference 5170. Combining a traditional column-wheel chronograph with a perpetual calendar mechanism, the movement represents a significant evolution from its predecessors and carries the Patek Philippe Seal.

Introduced in 2009, the Patek Philippe Seal established a new quality benchmark for the manufacture’s mechanical timepieces. Unlike standards concerned principally with the movement, the Seal applies to the complete assembled watch and encompasses criteria ranging from precision and technical performance to finishing and long-term reliability. It also embodies Patek Philippe’s commitment to servicing, repairing and restoring its timepieces throughout their lifetime, including watches produced since the manufacture’s foundation in 1839.
