'January 1973: 1' forms an important part of Patrick Heron's January 1973 series of nineteen prints. This series is made up of different drawn abstract compositions that have been subjected to diverse colour variations. Heron heroed this process of printmaking throughout the 1970s, commencing with his first prints made under the direction of master print technician Chris Prater at Kelpra Press, London in 1967.
As seen in Heron's paintings, his screenprints feature his signature use of colour, with overlapping shapes and forms creating intricate compositions. He utilised this medium to explore various themes and motifs present in his paintings, translating his distinctive aesthetic into a different format.
