PAUL-FRANÇOIS BERTHOUD (Paris, 1870-1939).
"Sarah Bernhardt".
Marble and bronze.
Signed.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Measurements: 45 cm (height).
This bust bears similarities to that of Joan of Arc (1896), also by Paul François Berthoud, now in the Victor Arwas Collection. The busts of Sarah Bernhardt, whom he portrayed on more than one occasion, are his most important works. Sarah Bernhardt was a French stage and film actress, one of the most famous and acclaimed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Paul François Berthoud was a magnificent representative of the most symbolist sculpture of Art Nouveau. He was a pupil of Pierre Dupuis, Emmanuel Fontaine and Antonin Larroux. He was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a founding member of the Salon d'Automne and an honourable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1898. Paul-François Berthoud signed many of his works under the pseudonym Gilbert Lanquetin. In 2017, the Musée de Châteaudun dedicated an exhibition to him. His most famous sculpture remains a bust of Sarah Bernhardt (patinated terracotta, 1900).
