The case depicting a reclining bare-breasted Hope feeding a winged putto on a plinth base decorated with a young mercury, two putti and a dog reading a book, the back of the plinth later signed Thomire a Paris, the 9cm white enamel Roman and Arabic dial with gilt fancy hands, set within a leaf bezel, the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and suspension adjustment screw with outside countwheel striking the hours and half hours on a bell. Together with a silk suspension pendulum. Currently running and striking. 42cms high
There is a similar example of this unusual allegorical representation in Niehüser, E. (1999) French Bronze Clocks. Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing, p. 123. The anchors at the sides of the base are a further symbol of Hope.
