First edition of one of the first works about taxidermy. Illustrated with 10 tipped-in intaglio plates. The author Pierre-François Nicolas (1743-1816) was an apothecary, doctor, then professor of chemistry. Book dedicated to the "citizen Lucien Bonaparte, Minister of the Interior". Practical treatise on taxidermy techniques in the eighteenth century: "rendre service aux amateurs de l'histoire naturelle. . . en leur offrant une manière simple, peu dispendieuse et nullement nuisible à la santé, de préparer tous les individus qui composent le Règne animal, pour les mettre en état d'être conservés très long-temps dans leur beauté et leur fraîcheur" p. Complete. FORMAT: Octavo (13 x 20. 5 cm) BINDING: Period tawny full sheepskin binding. Smooth spine adorned with gilded embossing. CONDITION: Solid binding, leather a little faded, gilding slightly faded, missing the title piece, restorations at the corners. Interior: important traces and stains on the first 10 sheets including the title page and on the plates at the end of the book. Plate 10 with marginal restoration without lacks.
