Catalogue note:
Philipp P. Fehl was an artist and art historian. Born in 1920 in Austria, he became a refugee and moved to the United States in 1941. He became an artist, author, and lecture at several universities, until teaching at the University of Illinois from 1969-1990, retiring as Professor Emeritus. In 1990, Fehl also initiated the Cicognara Project at the Vatican Library with his wife. These drawings are an example of the bird-like creatures, dubbed "capricci," that Fehl frequently incorporated into his work.
Many of Fehl's capricci drawings can be found in the Exile Archives at the German National Library,
