Signed, dated, and inscribed "Sea Barns" and "taken from Thunderbolt, Ga" in ink, upper right verso.Provenance: private collection, South Carolina.This large watercolor is a beautiful example of this Phillip Jewel Hampton's landscapes. From the early stages of his artistic and teaching career in Savannah, Hampton recorded his surroundings, rendering the sites of the coastal city and its neighboring towns in watercolor, echoing predecessors such as Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Bannister and Hale Woodruff. He continued to paint watercolor landscapes throught the 1960s with increasing elements of abstraction.
