The American photojournalist David Douglas Duncan (1916-2018) first met Picasso at La Californie, the artist's villa at Cannes, on 8th February 1956, and the two men quickly formed a close friendship which gave the photographer exceptional access to Picasso's private world. Duncan photographed the artist at work and at leisure, together with Jacqueline Roque, his children and numerous friends and visitors. The resulting photographs, remarkable for their informality and intimacy, were first published as The Private World of Pablo Picasso in 1958 and established Duncan as one of the most important photographic chroniclers of Picasso's later life.
