The Renoir etching, Baigneuse assise, circa 1897, is from the edition of 1000 (there was from a first printing of 525 in black and white), Pierre Auguste Renoir. This oft-ground etching on cream wove paper signed in plate upper left, stamped ink signature lower right 222x136 mm (8 & frac 34; x5 3/8 inches), edition of 1,000 from La Vie et l'Oeuvre de Pierre-Auguste Renoir Literature: Delteil 11 and Stella 11. Published in Leon Roger-Miles, Art et Nature, Paris. Renoir's etchings were never printed in suites or published in portfolios. Instead, he created them through commissions by friends and publishers as frontispieces or illustrations for books. Impressively, Renoir was able to develop his own style of etching independent of his development as a painter.
