[ translate ]

EDWARD S. CURTIS. Plate 41 Pima Baskets, 1907. 10.25x15.8" image on 12.25x17.25" copper plate. Plate date 1908. From Portfolio 2, Tribes of Arizona, of The North American Indian. Engraved on plate recto: Plate 41/ Pima Baskets /From Copyright Photograph 1907 by E.S. Curtis/Photogravure John Andrew & Son. Framed.

Curtis wrote about this: "The baskets made by the Pima, Papago, and Qahatika, as well as by their Maricopa neighbors, are practically identical in form and design, but the Maricopa basketry is of somewhat superior workmanship. The four-armed cross, a form of the swastika, appears as a central feature in the decoration of a majority of the Piman and Maricopa baskets of to-day, and while the true signification here is not known with certainty, it is not impossible that it was designed originally to represent the winds of the four cardinal directions. Less than a generation ago the swastika was employed by the Pima to decorate their shields, and as a brand for their horses."

Curtis' technical skills as a photographer, with lighting and printing was unsurpassed. This wizardry, a hallmark of the greatest photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, allowed them then to use to these tools to enhance their vision.
Condition Report: Very Good. Minor scratches, tarnish, dents, abrasions small dark spots, and ink residue throughout plate surface, all edges tarnished 1/4 inch.
