PLATE DECORATED WITH A PARROT AND A SPANIEL Meissen, ca. 1740.
A spaniel on a chain, yapping at a parrot sitting above him on a perch with flapping wings. Curved rim decorated with a foliage border in brown and gold alternating with four shell motifs. Underglaze blue sword mark.
Ø 23.5 cm.
Provenance:
- Aristocratic private collection, Southern Germany.
The plate on offer is part of a larger service, the majority of which (52 items) was formerly in the Ole Olsen collection. The decoration probably goes back to prints by the Dutch artist Petrus Schenk, who was the first Dutchman to be sent to Japan to create patterns based on Japanese designs for the East India Company VOC. A comparative item is in the Pauls-Eisenbeiss Collection, Riehen-Basel, see Collection Catalog 1972, Vol. I, p. 498ff.
