A rare color-plate costume book of Polish officers, often with their much-prized horses. Established in 1817, the Janów Podlaski Stud had provided the impetus for one of the great European horse-breeding programs of the 19th century. The plates show Polish officers of different regiments in their uniforms set against charming landscape backgrounds. Not in Colas.

Octavo (175 x 115mm). Lithographed title, 63 hand-colored lithographed plates with tissue guards. Contemporary Prussian blue straight-grain morocco gilt, with Polish eagle gilt-stamped on cover; pink silk endpapers, all edges gilt, in original slip-case dated 1824.
