POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH BY THE BANKNOTE ENGRAVER Second Quarter of the 19th Century
Obverse depicts a three-masted vessel flying a red, white and blue American flag entering a French port, with red, white and blue French flags flying from towers on each side of the port's mouth. A large building with a tower, several smaller buildings and stone walls line the port's shore. Reverse depicts a half-length portrait of a woman with her hands clasped in front of her in prayer. A decorative border surrounds the portrait and similar decorative borders surround the circumference of the tooth at tip and base, typical of the Banknote Engraver's work. Length 5.25".

Condition: Age lines at tip and base. Fracture at tip on obverse. Age cracks at base on both sides, extending into scenes approx. 1.5" and 2", but not particularly obtrusive. Small chip at base on one edge.
