PORTRAIT OF MR. R [Original Photogravure of Anson Davies Fitz Randolph]

[ translate ]

By Stieglitz, Alfred
Published in Camera Notes, volume I, number I (July 1897). Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 7 5/8 inches by 5 1/8 inches. In 1895 Stieglitz tried on several occasions to photograph New York poet and theology bookseller Anson Davies Fitz Randolph (1820-1896). Because Randolph always assumed an unnatural pose, Stieglitz eventually tricked his subject into believing he was just helping the photographer to measure the scene for a different photograph. The "surprise" photograph resulted in this more natural image. It was first produced in 1896 as a platinum print, with an image slightly smaller than this photogravure. That Stieglitz considered this image to be one of his better works is attested to by the fact that he chose it to be one of only two photgravures included in the very first issue of Camera Notes, the magazine he founded and edited for the New York Camera Club. He also selected it for inclusion in 7 different exhibitions during his lifetime. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a superb impression that is in virtually as-new condition. Now archivally matted in an off-white passe-partout. Size: 7 5/8 inches by 5 1/8 Inches
Published by: Camera Club of New York, New York, 1897
