POWDER FLASK

Swiss, ca. 1650.
Pressed cow-horn, flat shape with rounded top and bottom edges, decorative grooves. Gilt brass mounts; oval bottom-piece, screwed; cone-shaped middle piece; screwed lid with smooth, round spout; pivotable closure arm with lid and spring. The lid has an opening with a sliding cover for refilling the horn. All the metal surfaces feature opulently engraved chased decoration. Two carrying rings.
L 22.5 cm.

A rare powder horn with a decoration common to Swiss goldsmiths' work in the first half of the 17th century. Cf. Eva-Maria Lösel: Zürcher Goldschmiedekunst, Zurich 1983, p. 381, No.101. Herbert G. Houze: The sumptuos Flaske, Cody 1989, Nos. 19, 20 and 23.
