First American edition. Three volumes, publisher's blindstamped black cloth, the spines lettered in gilt, housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches (23.5 x 15 cm); xxxvi, 488; xviii, 480; xvii, 524 pp., with frontispiece portraits in each volume, two double-page maps, and one plate (facsimile of Cortes' signature), errata to p. 480, with half-titles to the first two volumes and not the third as issued. An unrestored set in sound condition with some wear and small losses to spine tips, cracks to front hinges following the heavy front free endpaper revealing some stains in the gutter, foxing worst at first and last leaves of third volume, light offset from signature plate to section title in volume III, ownership signatures of Charles P. Wurts to front free endpapers, bookplates of Messenger.

The first American edition of Prescott's highly popular work on Cortes and the conquest of Mexico, preceded by the London edition of the same year. Offered with the first American edition of Prescott's History of the Conquest of Peru (Harper & Brothers, 1847, two volumes in publisher's cloth, foxed). The lot 5 volumes. BAL 16340; Sabin 65262.
