A SMOKEY JADE ‘RICE-GRAIN’ PATTERN TWO-HANDLED CUP
China, Ming Dynasty, 16th-17th century
The cup is flanked on the sides by a pair of angular handles, and the body is carved with rows of bosses. The stone is of greyish colour.
H: 3,5 cm – w: 11,9 cm
Weight: 122 grams
Provenance: An important collection of jade carvings, mostly Ming libation cups, properties from a French private collector, assembled over 20 years, pieces either bought privately or at public auction.
Note: This kind of jade is referred to as “smokey jade” and may also been said to have been originally partially altered due to a ritual alteration. Indeed, the colour of the stone results from an exposure to smoke or fire.
