Tokyo, selfpublished, 1968-1969
First edition collection of PROVOKE Magazin Vol 1-3, SIGNED by Daido Moriyama ( Vol.2), Takuma Nakahira (Vol.1) and Yutaka Takanashi (Vol.2) Vol 1: soft cover, 21 x 20,9 cm, 68 pages Vol 2: soft cover, 18 x 24,3cm, 108 pages Vol 3: soft cover with fold-out front cover, 18,4 x 23, 9 cm,112 pages including two fold-out pages Provoke was first published in November 1968 as a selfpublished magazine. It was originally conceived by art critic Koji Taki, the two photographers Takuma Nakahira and Yutaka Takanashi and poet Takahiko Okada. The subtitle for the magazine was »Provocative Materials for Thought«, and each issue was composed of photographs, essays and poems. After releasing the second and third issue with Daido Moriyama as a subsequent member, the group broke up with their last publication. Provoke’s grainy, blurry, and out-of-focus photographs were initially ridiculed as a great deal of controversy and had created a strong impact inside and outside of the photography world during that time. However, today, Provoke has become an extremely rare and hard to find collector’s piece.
