[ translate ]

Punch & Judy - an original vintage complete Punch and Judy puppet theatre and puppets, as owned and used by famous Bristol-based entertainer Bert Bradford in the 1930s to 1960s. The set appears to be a collection of different-aged puppets and accessories, some puppets appearing Victorian / Edwardian and others a little later. Purchased by it's current owner in May 1965 directly from Bert Bradford, it is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Bradford to our client. The full set comprises: 1) The puppet theatre - wooden baton construction, with a fabric cloth cover, wooden proscenium and wooden stage area. A hand-painted vintage street-scene backdrop remains. The batons are numbered and instructions are provided in order to assist with its erection. The entire ensemble breaks down to fit into a custom-made wooden carry box. 2) The full set of required puppets, including: Mr Punch, Mrs Punch, The Baby, The Policeman, The Hangman, Crocodile (and the all-important sausages), The Beadle, The Clown, and The Servant. Some puppets appear to be late 19th century, others early 20th century and Mr / Mrs Punch c1940s. 'The Baby' in this production was housed in an oversized prop matchbox. 3) Show accessories - including the hangman's noose, an original 'Next Show' sign, and various clothing / props / spare puppet parts accumulated over the years. A unique piece of Bristol history, and the opportunity to acquire a complete original Punch and Judy theatre. When constructed, the theatre measures approx: 8ft tall, 3ft deep, 4ft wide.
