Painter from Romagna, early 16th century
Painter from Romagna, early 16th century
SAINT SEBASTIAN
oil on panel, 64.5x102 cm, unframed
Pittore romagnolo, inizio sec. XVI
SAN SEBASTIANO
olio su tavola, cm 64,5x102, senza cornice
The painting depicts Saint Sebastian bound to a column and seated on an elegant red drapery. Its stylistic features point to Romagnol painting of the first half of the sixteenth century, with the closest comparisons to be found in the oeuvre of Benedetto Coda (1492/1495–1535) and his son Bartolomeo (active until around 1543). Certain details, such as the rendering of the hands and the anatomy of the abdomen, can be closely compared with the altarpiece in the church of San Domenico in Ravenna, the Lamentation in the Basilica of the Madonna del Monte in Cesena, and the Madonna and Child Enthroned among Angels and Saints in the City Museum of Rimini.
