Adolf Frederik of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp was prince bishop of Lübeck 1727–1771 and king of Sweden 1751–1771.
On the reverse of the portrait an older and wrongly inscribtion informing that the portrait should depict Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Cassel.
Provenance: Descendants of King Frederick VIII of Denmark (1843–1912). On the backing a note about the depicted Adolf Frederik, written by King Frederik VIIIs son, Prince Harald of Denmark (1876–1949).
