Oil on canvas depicting "the adoration of the Child Jesus by the Wise Men". In the foreground are visible the Wise Men in the presence of Child Jesus, who is in Mary's arms. On one side there is St. Joseph, and below an ox. Estimated dating: late 18th / early 19th century This artwork has been relined and restretched, also subjected to pictorial restoration. New frame, made to measure by a craftsman. Subject: Matthew's Gospel tells about the Wise Men who came to Jerusalem led by a star, in search of the newborn King of the Jews. Originally from the Iranian plateau, the Wise Men were scholars of astronomy and related to the cult of the stars. Their names were Melchior, Balthazar and Gaspar. They brought as a gift gold, frankincense and myrrh, gifts that refer to the dual nature of Jesus, the human and the divine: gold is the gift reserved to the Kings and Jesus is the King of Kings, incense testifies to the adoration of his divinity, the myrrh, used in the worship of the dead, reminds us that Jesus is a mortal man.
