Subject: Matthew's Gospel tells about the Wise Men who came to Jerusalem led by a star, in search of the newborn King of the Jews. Originally from the Iranian plateau, the Wise Men were scholars of astronomy and related to the cult of the stars. Their names were Melchior, Balthazar and Gaspar. They brought as a gift gold, frankincense and myrrh, gifts that refer to the dual nature of Jesus, the human and the divine: gold is the gift reserved to the Kings and Jesus is the King of Kings, incense testifies to the adoration of his divinity, the myrrh, used in the worship of the dead, reminds us that Jesus is a mortal man.
