Oil painting on canvas depicting Saint Louis adoring the crucifix. Work on first canvas with original frame. The colour is lifting in the centre of the canvas, as shown in the photos. Dimensions (without frame) : 33 x 23. 5 cm Subject: Luigi (1568–1591) was the son of Marquis Ferrante Gonzaga, who trained him in arms. At the age of 12, he received his First Communion from Saint Charles Borromeo and then decided to enter the Society of Jesus, renouncing his title and inheritance. He devoted himself to the humble and the sick, and died at only 23 years old, infected by the plague that struck Rome in 1590. Pope Benedict XIII canonised him on 31 December 1726.
