Pair 19th C. French Empire Chairs

[ translate ]

Pair of early 19th C. fauteuils, manner of Percier and Fontaine, Jacob -Desmalter. The curved top rail is relief carved with acanthus leaf, palmette, and floral scrolls on the front face and with classical key design on the back. The arms describe a graceful curving twist, echoed by the sides, their tops relief-carved the entire length with laurel leaves. The arm supports are the wings of helmeted Minerva heads, which rise above lion head medallions carved in deep relief. The seat rail is carved to echo the top rail. Nearly identical arm supports and lion medallions, as well as the motifs on the seat and top rails can be found in the published drawings of Charles Percier and his partner Pierre-Francois Leonard Fontaine. Chairs refinished and reupholstered, probably some time in the 20th century. The front of one of the crests of Minerva's helmet on one chair appears to have been chewed by a puppy. Height of back, approx. 39", seat approx. 18", width approx. 26".
