Charles Lyne was born at St. Germans, Cornwall on 2 March 1863 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 14 June 1879. Posted to H.M.S. Briton he reached his majority with her on 2 July 1881, being appointed Ordinary Seaman. Further advanced Able Seaman in 1883 he joined the Naval Brigade which landed at Suakin in 1884 to support General Graham's expedition.
The men of the Royal Naval Brigades helped to man the guns which were present within the squares the British formed at the Battles of El-Teb and Tamaai. The naval men found themselves in General Davis's square during the Battle of Tamaai and were involved in the bloody hand to hand fighting when the square was broken.
After the British withdrew from Sudan Lyne continued to serve, being advanced Petty Officer with Alexandria on 12 February 1888 and Chief Petty Officer with Trafalgar on 17 July 1893. Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve on 8 May 197 he was mobilised for service during the Great War on 2 August 1914. He largely served either ashore or with depot ships for the duration of the war and was demobilised on 14 May 1919; sold together with copied research including census data, service papers and medal rolls.
