LOT 0049

Pair Chinese Silk Sleeve panels 19th Century

[ translate ]

Tightly woven beige silk decorated with colorful embroideries of butterflies and flowers. These embroidered panels would have been used for cuffs on a robe.

A rectangular piece of silk has been joined by stitching down the center. The pale beige silk has been embroidered with silk threads in two types of embroidery stitch. There are flowers in pekin knot in the center with satin stitch flowers and butterflies above and below. A woven blue flower band was applied on the edge of the panel. The panel has been backed with a beige linen or cotton back. The front is bordered with a black silk damask edge.

There is a black ink stamped shield mark with what looks like the words MADE IN CHINA on the backing. There is another stamp on the opposite end but I can’t make it out.

MEASUREMENTS
20 ¼” (51.4 cm) long x 11 ¼” (28.6 cm) wide. Weighs 2.1 oz (60 g)

CONDITION
There is a pinkish stain in the center. There looks like dirt, staining and wear especially on one end. The colors are still bright for the age. There is some unraveling of the damask border at the corners.

A time consuming work of art by an experienced artisan that would look good framed. These silk pieces are a remnant of a different time.
