Pair Classical Spelter Mars & Minerva Sculptures
Late 19th-century European, French-style pair of patinated spelter figures depicting classical mythological subjects, possibly Mars (Ares), god of war, and Minerva (Athena), goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. Each figure is modeled in elaborate classical attire and raised on a circular black base; the male figure holds a long staff or spear, while the female figure holds a slender staff and shield-like attribute. Underside retains an old typed family provenance label stating the figures were given as a good-luck gift in 1926 and referring to them as bronze. No apparent maker marks observed. Approximate measurements: each 13.5 x 5 x 6 inches, excluding the projecting staff, which extends approximately 5 inches.
Condition: Good overall antique condition with typical surface wear, patina variation, light oxidation, and scattered rubbing consistent with age and previous handling. Bases exhibit normal storage wear. A small hole to the top of the male figures head suggests a possible missing element. Note: This condition statement is provided as a courtesy and reflects an opinion, not a statement of fact. Bidders are encouraged to inspect items in person or through an agent to assess condition. Estate fresh to the market.
