Pair Wood Figures Mandalay Burma

Pair of carved and polychromed wooden figures, Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma), ca. 1857.
There are nearly identical figures displayed in Wat Chong (Jong) Klang in the northern Thailand city of Mae Hong Son. In this temple are displayed 33 wooden human and animal figures representing scenes from the Vessantara Jataka. They were carved by Mandalay artisans and taken from Burma in 1857, the year Mandalay was built. These figures depict people from all levels of Burmese society, including toothless emaciated peasants, tattooed warriors and elegant upper class ladies.
