Pair of Chancay Textile Fragments

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. Two fragmentary textiles comprised of tightly-woven natural fibers in hue of coffee, cream, caramel, and wheat. First is a lengthy coffee-and-cream textile with a decorative register of abstract geometric forms depicting what appears to be shamanic in nature; a pair of conjoined avian figures flanks either elongated diagonal arm of the central form. Second is a huge wheat-hued textile exhibiting dozens of simplistic pelican forms with petite bodies and stretched necks, with smaller, upside-down avian figures filling in the spaces in-between. The top and bottom borders display an undulating pattern. A fantastic and expressive ensemble! Size of largest (pelican textile): 18.5" L (47 cm).

Provenance: private Leonard collection, Falls Church, Virginia, USA, acquired before 1979

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#130946
Condition Report: Both textiles have expected age-commensurate surface wear, fraying and small losses to peripheries and interior details, light staining and discoloration, otherwise very good.
