LOT 23

Pair of Chinese enamelled cockerels

[ translate ]

Modelled facing one another in mirror image, the plumage moulded in relief and brightly enamelled in yellow, turquoise and aubergine, the comb and wattle painted in aubergine, the base glazed in olive-green and brown. Period: 19th century. Height: 31.5 cm.

The cockscomb plant in Chinese is jiguanhua and the cockerel or rooster is gongji.
Together they suggest the phrase guanshan jiguan which may be translated as ‘may you continuously rise in rank’. A large cockerel on a rock suggests the phrase shishang daji (may there be good fortune in the home).

Buyers will be charged an import VAT of 12% in addition to buyer’s premium on hammer price.

Condition: For condition report, please contact the department here.

Provenance: Wladimir Simon Semcesen (1906-1969), thence by descent.

Wladimir Simon Semcesen (1906‑1969) born in Austria Hungary, settled in Oslo, Norway in 1936. In the 1950’s and 1960’s before the Cultural Revolution in China, he acquired works of art in China that he brought back to Europe.
