[ translate ]

DESCRIPTION: (2 Pc) Durham Silver 1950’s Sterling Silver Candelabras. These elegant sterling silver pair of 2-light candelabra depicts graceful swirls with a stylized tulip bud known as the fleur danoise, or Danish flower. Candelabras are both marked on the underside: Durham Sterling –130.

Silversmith artist, Alphonse La Paglia (1907-1953), designed this vintage 1950s candlestick holder. The mid-century candelabra features long trumpet shaped sconces with spherical detailing to the base and two organic vine-like arms with scrolled flower buds at the center. It was finished with a sturdy foot (not weighted). The underside is marked “Sterling, 130”, "Durham" (Durham Silver Co. of NY, NY). The design is attributed to Alphonse La Paglia.

La Paglia was born in Sicily, studied with Georg Jensen in Denmark and emerged in the US during the 1940s where he crafted jewelry and hollowware. In 1952 he started working with International Silver Co. to create Modernist Danish inspired works that were retailed by International. His designs were produced for four more years after his sudden death in 1953.
