attributed to Gillows of Lancaster

Footnote: This pair of pedestal cupboards surmounted by urns relates to examples ordered by the Weld family for Lulworth Castle, Dorset, circa 1775-85 (see S. Stuart Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, 2008, vol. I, p. 310, pl 346 & 347. Another pair of similar design with identical handles is in the collection of Thirsk Hall, North Yorkshire (ibid., vol I. p. 309, pl 342-345).

A pair of very close design was sold Christies, New York, 7 April 2006, lot 304. Dimensions: Condition Report: Very well made. Structurally sound. With an overall deep chestnut color to timber Some fading to timber overall as visible in catalogue photos. In overall good restored condition. General marks, nicks, scratches, cracking and wear overall commensurate with age and use. Finial to one broken and repaired. With original lining to each urn. With coopered slats to urns separating somewhat. Areas of overpainted repair and staining to urns. Lions mask handles with replacements to securing screws to ears. Polish residue to crevices. Beautifully figured timber to cupboard doors. Doors open on same side. With shrinkage cracking to timber in areas. Staining to bases. Cracking to backboards.
