Pair of Holy Land / Iron Age Pottery Vessels

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Holy Land, Iron Age, ca. 8th to 5th century BCE. A pair of small, complementary red buffware pottery vessels from the Holy Land, commonly referred to as "juglets." One has twin loop handles, set on one side (rather than exactly opposite each other). The other vessel has no handles, but does have a short spout projecting out from its shoulder. Both have a bulbous body shape with a rolled out rim. Size of largest (no handles): 3.85" W x 3" H (9.8 cm x 7.6 cm).

Historically, the Iron Age is the time when Israel was becoming a unified state under kings David and Solomon; meanwhile, influences from Cyprus, other parts of the Levant, and the Phoenicians were all creating a cultural melting pot that greatly influenced pottery styles. Juglets like this would presumably have been used to hold perfumes or other precious liquids.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Richard F. collection, New York, New York, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#133720
Condition Report: Both items have age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks and chips to bodies, bases, and rims, small hairline fissures, and fading to pottery color. Nice earthen deposits and heavy encrustations throughout.
