Pair of Jalisco Sheepface Pottery Figures

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely duo of terracotta standing figures from the ancient Jalisco shaft-tomb culture. Both figures have attenuated limbs and arched feet, wide torsos, and rounded shoulders. The heads of both display characteristic "sheepface" qualities such as elongated noses, thin mouths, diagonal slit-shaped eyes, broad ears, and tall foreheads with stylized headbands. Both figures are painted in a vibrant orange-red pigment with white details; the white areas on the shorter figure have taken on a light-orange color over time. Size of tallest: 4.125" H (10.5 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

Condition Report: Repair to one eye and ear to smaller figure as well as some orange discoloration. Both figures have age-commensurate surface wear, fading and losses to surface pigmentation, minor chips and losses to arms, feet, noses, and heads, and light earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
