Pair of Japanese Edo Cloth & Lacquered Iron Thigh Pads

East Asia, Japan, later Edo Period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A set of two matching thigh pads, known as kusazuri, that were secured above the top of the armored thigh panels (haidate). Each ovoid panel bears a flexible form with several black-lacquered iron bars arranged vertically to prevent against slashing blows. The cloth backing was meant to save weight while still providing ample protection, and the cloth-lined lower section exhibits a hexagonal stitching pattern. The tie straps are secured to the front of each pad and bear petite white flower patterns. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 11.5" W x 12" H (29.2 cm x 30.5 cm)
