Pair of Mixtec & Costa Rican Pottery Tripod Vessels

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya, ca. 300 to 800 CE; Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An impressive pair of hand-built pottery tripod vessels from ancient Mixtec and Costa Rican cultures. The first dish is from the Mixtec culture and presents a round base, a squat, hemispherical body, and a circular rim supported by three tapered feet. Adorned in hues of burnt sienna, cream, and black, the exterior of the lovely vessel features a zigzag design near its rim, a polka-dot pattern below, and a target-motif on its base. Alternatively, the second dish displays an acorn-shaped body and a flared rim sitting upon 3 lengthy, slender legs with pointed feet. A creamy beige pigment envelops the entirety of the ancient dish. Size of largest (Costa Rican vessel): 4" in diameter x 5.5" H (10.2 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010

Condition Report: Mixtec vessel: Repaired from several pieces with old repair to one leg and area around leg. Restoration over some break lines and losses to rim. Costa Rican vessel: Repairs to rims with break lines visible. Chips to rim. Both have expected nicks, chips, abrasions, scratches, and char marks, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice.
