Pair of Viking Bronze Penannular Brooches

**First Time At Auction**

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. Two fine examples of penannular brooches cast from bronze, each with elongated terminals. A loop and pin is wrapped around the ovoid ring of each, though one pin is missing. This style of brooch was originally created in the Celtic British Isles around 600 CE, and became popular throughout Scandinavia after the Vikings began to have contact with Celtic peoples following their forays along the coasts at the end of the 8th century CE. A lovely green patina envelops the surfaces of both brooches. Size of largest (missing pin): 3.75" H (9.5 cm).

Condition Report: One brooch has a missing pin. Both items have age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall forms, and light areas of roughness. Nice mineral deposits and lovely green patina throughout.
