Paleolithic European Stone Hand Axe

Western Europe, Paleolithic to Neolithic, ca. 250,000 to 15,000 BCE. A hand-knapped flint stone hammer or cutting tool flaked to a bifacial shape. The peripheries are flaked with a sharp cutting edge, and the thick, flattened end may have been used for pounding. This blade was likely manufactured by homo erectus, a close ancestor of modern humans, and was made to be used in a variety of tasks, such as cutting, digging, and scraping hides. Axes like is one have a nice heft and fit squarely in even a modern hand. Size: 7" L x 4" W (17.8 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
