Paracas Polychrome Human Effigy Figure, TL Tested

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. Truly magnificent, a highly decorated and expressive polychrome pottery human effigy figure, with extended legs, applied arms and incised fingers placed on hips, a massive chest adorned by repeated incised circular motifs in black on a yellow ground, with the abdominal area covered by seven vertical columns of interlocking triangular motifs in alternating red and gold and green and white color palettes. The head presents an emotive face with incised and painted black and white eyes, a protruding angular nose, a down-turned mouth brandishing incised teeth, a protruding chin, wide tab ears, an exaggeratedly large forehead and a red sinuous coiffure or headdress. Interestingly, his back is flat, suggesting that this votive was intended to lie down. Size: 15" H (38.1 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: ex-Ramon Alonso collection, Spain, acquired in the mid 1960s, thence by descent upon his death in 1976

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
